The Meters Re-Visited

Although the meters have already appeared on my blog I felt I needed to revisit them as I was felt I was missing the importance of these covers are to the band. These were what the band really aspired to and wanted art work in the style of The Meters so I re-studied them to get back on track.
In these first two examples of covers are quite psychedelic  with the use of a lot of colours and below with the wavy background with highlighted tall iconic 70's typography. the covers have a fun appeal and really sum up their music the typography is whacky with swirls reminds me a lot of the 'Jokerman' typeface which really is quite hideous but I'm sure at the time it was fab.

I'm sure I keep repeating myself but i need to get it into my head, the use of swirled serifs and uneven positioning to me portrays a sound or a funky beat, sort of conveying the music is unconventional it's breaking out of the box? The album cover to the left is what i would class as pure 70's design, the mesmerising background with the waves is conventional to 70's design as well as the tall uppercase typography used below. I think in my design i may steer away from flowing typography as I had a recent email from the band...
"Also retro typography would be cool, maybe with a mix of something new as we are a young band playing older music.

Thanks Becky"

So ideally I would like to base my ideas on the retro look but re-vamp it and re-invent....hopefully, and definitely use bright bold colours in some form of explosion across the page? (not a literally an explosion....a colour explosion.) to express movement and a party upbeat vibe?
